What to expect?
Laxaþjóð – A Salmon Nation – Patagonia Europe’s latest campaign tells the story of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses, threatened by a rapidly growing open-pen salmon farming industry. Pristine coastlines, remote mountain rivers, and the foundation of Iceland’s natural identity, are all at risk if this harmful practice continues, but it’s the efforts of individuals and communities that are stopping the industry in its tracks. With the film and supporting campaign, Patagonia have joined forces with an incredible grassroots movement, led by NGO partners Icelandic Wildlife Fund, North Atlantic Salmon Fund, Aegis and others calling on the Icelandic government to show leadership in Europe and ban open net salmon farming.
Here in the UK, Patagonia have supported Wildfish and their Off the Table campaign for many years through their 1% for the planet commitment. This session will explore the issues impacting UK waters and what the teams are working to put an end to destructive farmed salmon practices. Joining Patagonia will be Wildfish’s Director Rachel Mulrenan and Redroaster, a certified B Corp with a chain of restaurants in Brighton who have committed to not serving open net farmed salmon in any of their restaurants.
Why join this session?
To learn more about Patagonia’s work with grassroot organisations particularly around open pen salmon farming but also within their 1% network. To learn more about the destructive practice of open pen salmon farming, the treat to our Wild Salmon populations, what is being done about it with pathways to action for individuals and businesses.
What are the key outcomes?
To be motivated to join the Off the Table movement and to stop eating / buying farmed salmon and for any interested parties who join the event to commit to taking farmed salmon off their plates, menus and out of their supply chain.
